Pompeii & Vesuvius Full-Day Guided Tour
Piazza Tasso, Sorrento
A proven full day at a fair price; groups up to 30

children. The private tour is priced per group, not per person. Every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.
The honest version
Two hours in a buried city, then a real climb.
Pompeii lies about 28 km from Sorrento, 40 to 50 minutes by road, and Vesuvius looms right behind it. A
tour gives you roughly two guided hours inside Pompeii: the Forum, the baths, the bakeries, the
brothel, the House of the Faun and the theatres. It is a huge site, so the Amphitheatre at the far end and the
Villa of the Mysteries are usually left out. People who want every corner should book Pompeii on its own.
Then the bus climbs the volcano to the car park at about 1,000 metres. Nobody drives you to the top:
the last stretch is a gravel path that climbs steeply to the crater rim at about 1,170 metres. The park calls
the trail easy; guests call it a trek and take 30 to 40 minutes to reach the top, with stops. The
reward is the smoking crater at your feet and the whole Bay of Naples below.
1,170 m
The highest point of the crater path. It is windy and
cooler up there, and the path closes on orange weather alerts.

★★★★★
Such a fun and memorable tour! It was the perfect mix of history, archaeology, and adventure. Exploring Pompeii was fascinating, and then finishing the day by hiking up Mount Vesuvius made the experience even better.
★★★★★
Pompeii was incredible: the tour guide knew exactly where to take us and explained the history and interesting facts. Vesuvius was a hard climb, very steep incline, but you can stop at various stages to rest.
★★★★★
Important to go early before it gets really hot. Take hat, sunglasses and possibly shade umbrella for Pompei. The walk up Vesuvius is steep but manageable. So everyone gets something fun to do.
★★★★★
Would highly recommend! The guide, Dannie, was excellent. The bus driver was great also. This was a very smooth trip. Don't waste your time booking separately. Use this tour!
★★★★★
Pompeii was amazing. It is a huge site and Lou-Lou was fabulous and got us through most of the site in the nice and not too hot weather. Vesuvius was fabulous but not for people who can't walk up a steep mountain! But WE DID IT!
★★★★★
Max our tour guide was very good at getting us through the site in an efficient manner, and Monica our archeologist was so detailed about the history of Pompeii. Also excellent getting our group through before it got crowded.
Another day from Sorrento
Rest your legs on the Amalfi Coast
No ruins and no slopes: a boat along the cliffs to Amalfi, a stop up in Ravello and an hour in
Positano. A good second day after the volcano.
Amalfi Coast Boat Tour from Sorrento
★ 4.2 · 230 reviews · 8 to 9 hours
Save your legs for a day on the water: a boat from Piano di Sorrento past the Li Galli islets and the Crapolla fjord to Amalfi, with three hours there, an hour up in Ravello and an hour in Positano before sailing back along the cliffs.
Pompeii and Vesuvius make the most famous day trip from Sorrento: the Roman town that the
eruption of AD 79 buried under ash, and the volcano that buried it. Here is what a tour covers, what you pay on
top, and how to get the best out of a long, warm day on your feet.
What the day really is
A Pompeii and Vesuvius tour is two very different half days glued together. The first is a guided walk
through a Roman town: paved streets with deep cart ruts, the Forum, public baths, bakeries with their millstones,
frescoed houses and the plaster casts of people caught by the eruption. The second is a mountain: the bus climbs
the volcano to a car park at about 1,000 metres, and you walk the rest of the way to the rim on a gravel path.
Most tours run Pompeii in the morning and the volcano after lunch; the pizza tour does the reverse.
Pompeian red: many houses still keep their painted walls.
What it costs, and what you would pay on your own
Group tours start from $133 per person on Viator in 2026, small groups of up to 12 with hotel pickup from
$195, and a private tour from $611 per group. On your own you would pay €20 for Pompeii and €10 for the Vesuvius
ticket, plus the train to Pompeii and a bus up the volcano. That is much cheaper, but the timed volcano slot and
the bus connections make a tight day, and you would still want a guide in Pompeii, where almost nothing is
signposted. The tour premium buys the driving, the timing and the explanations. Our
price guide works through both.
The honest small print: the complaints in recent reviews are not about Pompeii or the
view. They are about group size (30 or more on the bigger tours), headsets that cut out, only two hours in a
huge site, and a climb that is steeper than people expect. Pay for a small group if crowds bother you, stay
near the guide, and wear proper shoes.
The crater: what to expect
From the drop-off, the path climbs for 30 to 40 minutes at a steady, steep gradient, with a wooden fence on
the drop side and places to stop. At the top you walk along part of the rim and look straight down into the
crater, often with wisps of steam, and out across the Bay of Naples to Sorrento and Capri. It is windy and cooler
than the coast, and low cloud can roll in. The trail closes on orange weather alerts, and tours then either swap
in Herculaneum or refund part of the price. Read the crater hike guide
before you go.
The Gran Cono path: steady, steep and gravelly, with the bay behind you.
Making the most of the day
Book the earliest departure you can get, especially from June to September, and keep the first Sunday of the
month free for something else. Wear closed shoes with grip, carry water and a hat, and pack a light layer for the
top. Eat a proper lunch: pizza near the ruins is quick and good. If you care more about Pompeii than the volcano,
book the Pompeii-only tour or the Herculaneum combination instead.
Straight answers to what travelers ask most about Pompeii and Vesuvius from Sorrento.
Can you do Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day from Sorrento?
Yes, and most visitors do it on a guided day trip of 6 to 8.5 hours: about two hours with a guide inside Pompeii, then a drive up to about 1,000 metres and the walk to the Vesuvius crater rim. Doing both on your own is possible by train and bus, but the timed volcano ticket and the bus connections make it a tight day. See how the day works.
How much does a Pompeii and Vesuvius tour from Sorrento cost?
Group tours start from $133 per person on Viator in 2026, small groups of up to 12 with hotel pickup from $195, and a private tour from $611 per group. Every tour listed here includes the Pompeii ticket (€20 at the gate) and the Vesuvius crater ticket (€10 plus booking fees). Compare the tour price and the do-it-yourself cost.
Is lunch included?
Usually not. The Gray Line, coach and hotel-pickup tours leave about an hour for lunch at your own expense; guests report an optional set lunch of about €18. The small-group tour from HP Travel is the exception, with a pizza and soft drink lunch in the price.
How hard is the walk up Vesuvius?
Harder than most people expect. Buses stop at the car park at about 1,000 metres, and the gravel path to the rim climbs steeply for 30 to 40 minutes. The park rates the trail easy, but reviewers call it a trek: go at your own pace and stop to rest. It is windy and cooler at the top. Read the crater hike guide.
How long do you get inside Pompeii?
About two hours with a guide on most tours, three on the coach tour. That covers the classic loop around the Forum, the baths, the House of the Faun and the theatres, but not the Amphitheatre at the far end or the Villa of the Mysteries. If Pompeii matters more to you than the volcano, take the Pompeii-only tour.
What happens if Vesuvius is closed?
The crater path closes on an orange weather alert or during wildfires. Gray Line swaps in a skip-the-line visit to Herculaneum when it knows in advance; Buyourtour refunds part of the price. All tours here cancel free up to 24 hours before, so check the forecast the day before.
Where do the tours start in Sorrento?
Gray Line tours leave from its office on Piazza Tasso, behind the Torquato Tasso statue. Askos and Buyourtour meet at Piazza Lauro, and the small-group tour from Enjoy Pompeii picks you up at your hotel. Your voucher gives the exact time; arrive 15 minutes early.
Should you see Pompeii or Vesuvius first?
Most tours do Pompeii in the morning, before the heat and the crowds, and Vesuvius after lunch, when the crater is often clearer. The pizza tour does it the other way round. Either works; the order matters less than good shoes and water.
Is the Pompeii and Vesuvius tour good for kids?
For school-age kids who can walk, yes. Under-18s enter Pompeii free and under-6s go up Vesuvius free, so family prices are lower than they look. Strollers are hard work on the ancient paving and the crater path. Gray Line charges children under 13 a reduced rate.
What should you wear?
Closed shoes with grip, a hat, sunscreen and a light windproof layer for the top of the volcano, plus at least a litre of water. Pompeii has little shade. See what to wear and bring.
Can you go on the first Sunday of the month?
You can, and Pompeii is free for everyone that day, but it is the busiest day of the month and skip-the-line entry does not apply, so tours can lose time at the gate. Pick another day if you can.
Can I cancel a Pompeii and Vesuvius tour?
Yes. Every tour on this page can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start time on Viator.
